Gold & silver for the prepared

Practical, no-hype guides to owning physical precious metals: what to buy, what it really costs, how to store it and the questions to ask before you spend a dollar.

How we approach precious metals

Precious metals get sold with a lot of fear and big promises. We do the opposite. These guides explain how physical gold and silver actually work, including the costs dealers don't always lead with: premiums over spot, buyback spreads, storage and fees.

For preppers, metals are one layer of a plan, not the whole plan. Water, food, medical supplies, some cash and a paid-down household come first. Metals are something physical you can hold in your hand, with real costs and real price swings.

The five questions to ask any dealer

  1. What is the price per ounce over spot for this exact product?
  2. What would you pay me to buy it back today?
  3. What are shipping, insurance and storage costs?
  4. Is this bullion or a collectible, and why does it cost more?
  5. Can I take time to decide with no pressure?

Any honest seller will answer all five in writing.

Common questions

What is the best precious metal for preppers?

Many preppers start with silver, especially pre-1965 junk silver coins, because it comes in small, recognizable units that are easy to trade. Gold stores far more value in less space. Many people hold some of each. See our gold vs silver guide.

Is buying gold and silver a good investment?

We can't tell you that, and no honest source can promise it. Metal prices rise and fall, physical metal pays no interest or dividends, and buying and selling has costs. These guides explain how metals work so you can decide with a professional whether they fit your situation.
